Medical Interpreter Certificate (Download Catalog Here)This 40-hour curriculum is designed to train entry-level medical interpreters in to meet the needs of doctors' offices, hospitals, emergency rooms, and other medical facilities. Students will study the basic elements of medical interpreting and prepare to enter this growing field with this introductory course. Learn about the need for healthcare interpreting, recent developments in the field, its professional ethics, and standards of practice. Examine challenges and ethical dilemmas that often arise when interpreters and medical professionals interact, and develop the judgment needed to respond to them through role playing. Prerequisites: Age: 16 (License or other government issued ID with DOB) Proof of Proficiency: LTI test or equivalent Students may begin course pending receipt of these documents. Students will not obtain certificate until all prerequisite documents have been received by MiTio. MiTio will assist students needing LTI testing. Course Content: Lectures: Videos:

Medical Abbreviations; Customer Service/Interpreting Professionalism; Cultural
Competency; Medical Terminology Etymology.
*All other practice sessions are mock interpreting scenarios
for the various clinics/departments such as: ER, OB, Pediatrics, Dermatology, Neurology,
ENT, etc.

Course Content: Lectures: Interpreting Protocols; Office Visit; The Health Care Team; Cultural Competency; Epidemiology; Clinical Manifestations; Diagnostic Markers; Contagious Infections; Mental Health Considerations; Bioterrorism and Chemical Warfare; Emergency Room Procedures in Chemical Hazards Videos: Immigrant health, Diabetes communication with patient, LEP communication with patient, Obesity communication with patient.
