MiTio History

Welcome to MiTio! Bienvenidos a MiTio!

MiTio is an accredited Online Medical Interpreting Program that delivers quality medical interpreting education online to bilingual individuals seeking a flexible way to obtain their Interpreting and Translating Diploma.   MiTio's founder, Nelva M. Lee, Ph.D., is a native of Panama, hence the Mola design in our logo.

Dr. Lee has twenty years of Health Care experience. Dr. Lee has worked in various medical settings (outpatient, inpatient, private, and public institutions). Dr. Lee has also worked as an adjunct faculty for 12 years with various institutions. Dr. Lee has a Bachelors in Health Care Administration; a Masters in Health Services Administrations and a Ph.D. in Health Care Administration. Dr. Lee has held titles in healthcare such as Coordinator for an Autism Program, Coordinator of Mental Health Services for the Department of Health, and Dr. Lee’s most recent administrator position was as the Director of Patient Advocacy for the Grady Health System.

While a director at the Grady Health System, Dr. Lee was responsible for revamping the Interpreting Program system wide. To do this, Dr. Lee sought to train all of her current and future interpreters and translators. It was through this venture that Dr. Lee became aware of the lack of flexible learning opportunities for interprets and translators and lack of Certification nation wide. That recognition and Dr. Lee's passion for quality delivery of healthcare, lead her to develop and found the Medical Interpreting and Translating Institute Online (MiTio) and become involved in Certification efforts. Dr. Lee was the inaugural Chair of the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI).

It is her honor and pleasure that you have joined us on this most fascinating journey.

Welcome to the MiTio Family!

Dr. Nelva M. Lee, President
